At the Future Identity and Fintech Talents festival on November 15th & 16th, we caught up with Annet Steenbergen, Chair of the IATA Passenger Facilitation working group, at the Government of Aruba.
Since 2012, Annet has advised on the development of digital identity and biometric passenger facilitation in Aruba, as well as on aspects of data sharing and privacy.
Having worked in the industry for many years, Annet shared her perspective on how quickly identity is expanding, with new commercial initiatives, standards organisations, and government working groups emerging in growing numbers.

Annet Steenbergen is the co-founder/initiator of the Aruba Happy Flow biometric border control project with the Government of Aruba. Annet is renowned for establishing the world’s first single token initiative for international travel.
From check-in to boarding, a passenger’s face biometric is their identification token and they are only required to show a passport once at enrolment. A seamless passenger flow is created from curb to gate, improving security and convenience for international travellers.
The project involved cooperation between the public and private sector, including the governments of Aruba and the Netherlands, KLM Airlines, the Aruba Airport Authority, and the biometric vendor.
Annet has since been working on the pilot for phase 2, which will connect off-airport stakeholders to facilitate a seamless biometric identity check from arrival to car rental pick up to hotel check in.
